National Holidays, Short Persons Day

Full disclosure, this post is about to get really personal, really fast. There’s a national holiday for everything these days, and while I do enjoy a lot of them, and laugh at others, today’s hit hard for me. Today is National Short Persons Day. This is probably one of those national days that people laugh at, especially if they aren’t short. I consider myself a “short person” at 5′ 2″ and my sisters are under the average height for their age. One could say shortness runs in our family. Certainly it does, our Grandma was under 5 feet, and that is 100% where we got the short genes from. So this is where it gets real, our Grandma was under 5 feet…as I type this I’m thinking, this is the first time I’m posting about my Grandma passing away.

Every Christmas since before I was born, my Grandma has come to town. This will be the first Christmas I don’t see Grandma. In fact, she would be here right now if it were any other year. Telling me about books she’s reading, reminiscing over the old television shows we like to watch, and always trying to take pictures of her grandkids. I can hear and see it, “Danielle, can I get a picture?” *snap*. Who knows how many confused grandchildren pictures she had on her phone. Every Christmas visit was always a test to see if you had surpassed Grandma in height. There are so many things that will be different this Christmas without her, and that’s way “National Short Persons Day” hit home with me. I know first hand now how the holiday season might not be so merry and bright. But I am so so grateful for the time I had with my Grandma and all the Christmas, and non-Christmas, memories I made with her.

To end on an up note, Happy National Short Persons day to all my other short persons out there! Remember where that height may have come from and thank them for it! Besides, the best things come in small packages. Merry Christmas!

Thanks for sharing your personal story. It’s difficult when someone we love passes away, and even more when they can’t be with us for the first year. Your grandma sounds like a wonderful, fun person. It also sounds like you are looking on the bright side and reminiscing on those happy memories. I hope you have a great holiday season and find peace in your reflections.
