Selkie dresses have become an icon for every princess at heart. And no dress screams “I’m a princess” more than the Selkie puff dress. Whether it’s the mini, midi, or maxi version of the Selkie puff dress, you’ll be sure to turn heads.
Selkie recently had a grab bag sale that I was so hoping to score something during. But within 30 seconds, they were sold out in every size. While I’m super disappointed, I’m glad that I’ve been able to rent some Selkie pieces from Nuuly. In total, I’ve rented 4 Selkie dresses. Overall I’ve loved them all, but the Selkie puff dress is hands down my favorite. The midi length in particular is the perfect length because you don’t have to worry about a gust of wind.
Bridal Selkie Puff Dress
I rented this dress with bridal in mind. It took a few months of waiting but it finally became available to rent! Needless, to say, I won’t be sending back my Nuuly shipment until after the wedding! This dress is an absolute dream! Before renting this Selkie dress I rented another with a very similar silhouette. It was a midi length and I wore it to my first cake tasting. I have also bought a selkie look-a-like for under $50 before that turned out fairly well. But nothing can compare to the beauty and quality of a Selkie dress!

Affordable Selkie Look-A-Likes
I’ve become so obsessed with Selkie but I know the only way I can afford them is through their grab bags. Either that or by seriously splurging. So far I’ve only opted to rent items. However, I’ve found some great look-a-likes on Amazon that I’ve purchased myself and love. They’re under $50 and honestly exceeded my expectations. There is a catch though, if it’s not in the classic puff silhouette, you’re not going to get any quality and end up wasting your money.
I’ve purchased 2 Selkie look-a-like dresses thus far, both from the same Amazon seller. The quality on the two dresses did not match. One was (imo) amazing. The other is still sitting in my closet because the fit and quality are seriously lacking. So how do you avoid my mistake? I’d recommend sticking with the classic puff design and not venturing any farther than that.
Look-A-Like Review
- You get what you pay for – There’s a reason the Selkie puff dress is so expensive. That’s becuase you are getting quality and sustainability all in one. Do not ever expect that from anything you buy from Amazon. Did the look-a-like exceed my expectations for a $20 dress? Yes. Did it meet Selkies standard? Absolutely not. It’s a price you pay for a $200+ discount.
- It is sheer – While some people in the review section crack this up to be poor quality, it’s on par with how Selkies puff dresses are. The bodice is always sheer. In fact, I’d say the Selkie puff dress is more sheer than the look-a-like. A skin colored bra or some pasties are a must, especially if you’re wanting the white dress!
- Shipping takes some time – The look-a-like I opted to buy did not have free shipping and took a few weeks to arrive. Keep this in mind as you will not be getting it on a tight deadline.
Bottom line, I’m happy with the look-a-like dress I purchased from Amazon. It was a great bang for your buck, especially compared to the real Selkie puff dress. Will I be purchasing another look-a-like? All depends if I have another occassion for it! I’ve included my look-a-like recommendations below.
