4 Tips to Prepare for Moving

I was pulling out my Christmas mugs yesterday from my top shelf and started to think about moving. Not that I’m going anywhere for another 6 months, at least, but you can never be too prepared! Michael and I have been talking about our move since we signed our last lease renewal. There’s no real plan for when or where we will move, but we know it’s something we’ll have to do eventually. So naturally in the midst of swapping out Halloween mugs for Christmas mugs, I started to think about what we’ll need to do when we do move. I think these 4 tips will greatly decrease our stress when we finally do the deed and move. *Pun intended*.

4 Tips for a Stress Free Move

Without a doubt I will be using all 4 of these tips when it comes time to move. Particularly this first one..it’s something I’ve always wanted to do but never really attempted or felt like making time for. (But time & sanity will be saved during the move with all these tips, especially no. 4).

Purge What You Have

Switching out my mugs was really what triggered this thought. I have probably over 100 mugs. Granted it is combined with Michaels mugs (many of which are repeats). Which means we can easily donate, sell, or just get rid of a good amount of mugs. Same thing goes for other things that create clutter. Bags of old cords, clothes you haven’t worn since you moved in, and so much more can be purged when you’re starting to pack for a move. Bonus – sell stuff on Poshmark to make a few quick bucks!

Utilize Your Type A Personality and Label Everything

I strongly believe everyone has a type A personality secretly hidden inside of them. Mine isn’t hidden at all, but Michael’s you have to dig a little deeper for. To keep everything organized and packed well try these tips:

  1. Pack items with rooms in mind – Pots, pans, oven mitts, and foil can all go in the same box marked for the kitchen. Apply the same logic for bedrooms, offices, and living spaces.
  2. Like items go together – Items that might not have a set space yet pack together. This is where my mugs come in again. Depending on what the kitchen looks like, they might not all fit in one space. But it’ll be easier knowing they’re all together. (And sorted by holiday, obviously).
  3. Large Labels – Don’t mess around with small pretty writing. The bigger the better on boxes! Don’t forget to label the room & items inside.

New Place, New Stuff

When we plan on moving we know we’ll inevitably be needing more stuff. Even with all the purging and trying to get rid of unnecessary items, when moving to a new place you’ll discover new needs for that space. Maybe it’s an extra table or a new chair. Regardless, knowing this before you finish the move will prove helpful. There’s nothing worse than sitting on the floor for weeks waiting for things to arrive.

Ask for Help

Save yourself the headache from trying to do it all yourself and ask for help. When Michael and I moved into our current place we had help from out families – which was such a blessing. But we both agree when we move again we will be using more than just friends and family. I know that a lot of people think if they’re making a local move they probably don’t need to hire help, but based on my own experiences I know I’ll be hiring movers. 24/7 Logistic Services are  extremely dependable when it comes to packing, moving and delivering your furniture and items. Their staff is professional, friendly, and of course trained with background-checked movers. They can pick up your belongings, load it into the truck and deliver it where it needs to go (even outside of Hollywood, Florida and the state of Florida period!) Be sure to give them a call even if you’re looking for long distance moving in Hollywood, Florida to help you move with ease.
