Five Must Read Tips for Moving

Today's guest post is piggy backing-off my moving thoughts.

Whether you are moving from an apartment to a home, from a home to storage and temporary housing or upgrading to a larger home you will need to read these tips! My family and I recently moved into a new home are were over the moon but post move there were a few things I would have done a little differently. Here is what I wish I would have remembered.

Just Ask

Post on your neighborhood page on facebook asking if anyone has any moving boxes. Nine times out of ten someone will have just moved in and wanting to clear out their garage of all the boxes anyways. This is the easiest way to save money on boxes while simultaneously helping a neighbor out. We lucked out and scored some labeled boxes from a friend which really helped. We just pulled the already labeled boxes and packed the same items in them.

Pack a Bag

For the day of the move pack a bag with an extra change of clothes, toiletries, chargers, wallets so when you get to where you are going you have easy access to your necessities. This will prevent from having to dig through a bunch of boxes to find different things after a long, tiring day of moving. There is nothing like a long, full day of moving only to finally get ready for bed and have no idea where your toothbrush or toothpaste is!

Cleaning Supplies

Don’t pack up your cleaning supplies until the end (and leave enough room in your car to take them with you) so you can do a final clean of the home after the movers are finished. I kept my vacuum, sponges, gloves, trash bag, counter top cleaner, bathroom cleaner and paper towels. This is the nicest way to leave the home and will be much appreciated by the buyer. Also the more inexpensive way to finish that final clean. Lucky for me my mom helped me clean so we were able to finish up quickly after the movers left. I mean who wants to move into a dirty home? Not me!

New Toy/Movie

If you are moving with little ones like I was, having a brand new toy for your baby will keep them distracted while you are able to unpack boxes and get the necessities set up. If you aren’t moving with little ones then I would pack a laptop or iPad that is easily accessible. Sometimes the tv service is not set up yet or the TV is not hung by the first night and relaxing to a good movie is always enjoyed after a long day.

Pack the Opener

Trust me, if you like to enjoy a glass of pinot grigio like I do you will want to remember this! I got through a full day of moving, will all of my boxes filling up my living room and all I wanted to do was reward my unpacking with a glass of wine only to find that I had no idea where my opener was (I had to open it will a screwdriver and a hammer) ! Same goes for a beer key, or if you don’t drink make sure you have your beverage of choice on hand it will definitely help the unpacking, overwhelmed spirits.
