I have been buying pieces to put this look together for months! I first saw this gingham on gingham look while Pinterest-ing one afternoon. It’s a look from J. Crew who knows how many seasons ago. Up until recently, my exposure to J. Crew & J. Crew Factory had been through other bloggers. This often times left out the gorgeous look-books that J. Crew puts together. Maybe there’s a taboo against copying looks straight out of a look-book, but personally I love it! If you adore a look, why shouldn’t you copy it piece for piece? Which is exactly what I did, this gingham on gingham is straight out of J. Crew’s playbook.
Mixing Patterns: Gingham on Gingham
I think it goes without saying but, mixing patterns can be hard. It’s so much easier to play it safe with on pattern and a solid or just all solids. Even though that’s safe, it certainly isn’t always fun. This is why I think taking an outfit directly from a look-book is good! It’s already been tested and people approved (sort-of). When I try and outfit from a look-book I can get nervous about what other people might think. Not everyone follows J. Crew religiously after all. But knowing that it’s been worn before gives me that confidence boost I need to rock it and not care what other people think.
Mixing patterns is one of my favorite things to try in order to create new outfits. Besides using a brands look-book, you can also use Pinterest for pattern mixing inspiration. It’s always fun to see how other style gurus are putting together outfits from pieces in their closet. Lastly, you can always just start throwing together two pieces and see if they work. Trust your gut. Remember, there’s no such thing as too outrageous when it comes to style. Who knows, you might just be the next great runway designer.
Collecting the Pieces
Like I said at the beginning, this outfit is inspired by an old J. Crew look-book. This means that, none of these items are really in stock anymore. I used my favorite re-sale app, Poshmark, to track down these gorgeous gingham items. It’s also where I found this gorgeous gingham jumpsuit. Even though the skirt is a bit hard to find (even similar styles) I have good news! The good news is, gingham on gingham seems to be coming back, especially for fall. Meaning you can find button downs just about everywhere right now. I was lucky enough to find this skirt on Poshmark in my exact J. Crew size, a 000. Don’t be afraid to try this look in other colors though! I see some serious potential with tartan and check coming this winter season.
Shop the Look
Because I pieced most of this look together with secondhand items I would highly recommend shopping on Poshmark or Ebay. If you aren’t sold on all the gingham have no fear, I’m linking other cute skirt options for you to mix and match your prints all season! I also made a collage to show how you can style this look in Blue too.
