This summer I’ve spent a lot of time and money investing in basics. While I’d usually opt for spending money on a new dress that is brightly colored and patterned, this year I’ve decided to make smart style decisions. I’m defining smart style as investing in pieces that can be worn throughout the year, and not just one or two seasons. As a Floridian, basics can go one step further. While not everyone can wear shorts in fall and winter, it’s a normal occurrence in here. Even so, basics like tees, and button-ups make great layering pieces when temperatures get colder. Here’s what I’ve invested in this summer.

Smart Style Finds
White Shorts
I’ve been on the hunt for the perfect pair of white shorts since early spring. A pair that is tailored but can still be worn in 100+ degrees, and also didn’t break the bank. While there were a few pairs on my wishlist, I settled on this pair from Zara. They’re under $50 and run true to size. However, if you’re looking for a slightly more comfortable and less tailored look, I’d recommend sizing up one.
Button Up
While I love the look of a classic button-up shirt, I own very few. And wear them even less. I wanted to give it another try this summer though, with something a little roomier. I’m not usually an “oversized” shirt type girl, but I think this makes it more versatile than a tailored look. It can be worn as a beach cover-up, with pants for work, or layered under a sweater in winter. And I have to say, I’ve worn it way more often than my fitted button ups. So even though buying it was a risk for me (would I wear it, would it sit in my closet?) it’s already paid off.
Ribbed Tank
While a tank top might be a less appealing basic to those who live up north, it’s the perfect staple of a Floridians wardrobe. (Looking for the northern alternative? Go with a ribbed tee). The color choice was extremely important to me, as I want this to be a year round basic. Which meant pastels were out of the question. I’ve been a real fan of neutrals this summer, so when I saw this tank available in chocolate, I jumped all over it. It can easily be worn in spring, summer, fall, and Florida winter.
