IMMERSE The Creative City Project

Last Saturday, I managed to attend the last day of The Worlds of Corkcicle exhibit in downtown Orlando. The exhibit was a part of the 2018 IMMERSE Creative City Project which presents art of all different forms to downtown Orlando once a year.

The IMMERSE Creative City Project started in 2013 in the form of performances in public spaces all across downtown Orlando. The founder did this with hardly any planning and no permission from the city itself. It was a hit. People loved it and it has become a part of the City Beautiful since then. I love it because it highlights amazing local artist and presents Orlando for more than a tourist attraction. Read here for the background and amazing story of how The Creative City Project came to be.

The Worlds of Corkcicle

As a part of this years immersive experience, Corkcicle set up The Worlds of Corkcicle, a photo experience. Over 10 different environments were built for people to take photographs in.  I’m telling you, some people went all out. For those of you that don’t know, Corkcicle was established in Orlando. It is very fitting that they had an exhibit during this years project. Maybe it wasn’t Corkcicles intention but, I thought this exhibit was a very interesting comment on today’s social media culture.

All of these “worlds” were very Instagram-able and I think that’s why it was so popular. It just goes to show how we try to always share this perfect life on social media. Even when, behind the scenes, you’re in a warehouse waiting in line just to get into the room! And why is there a line? Because some people need a shot so perfect to share with the world. I loved this exhibit, and I loved that it was a cheap opportunity for some adorable photo ops.

Today’s World

I left thinking about how much we aren’t real anymore. Everything is staged, and that is especially true on social media. So I have a question for you guys, how can I be more real with you? I know I’m just some words on a screen with maybe a few pretty pictures, but I want to be more than that. I want to really let you know how life is because the fact of the matter is, life isn’t perfect at all. Maybe that’s why we feel so drawn to these worlds that emulate a kind of perfection.

Oh did I mention there was a giant ball pit? Oh yeah, I was all about that! (As you can tell from this very romantic picture of me in the ball pit). See the post on this original outfit here.
