Today I’m mixing things up. Normally, I try and have a post published by the crack of dawn, but today I’m taking things slow. The internet isn’t going anywhere and neither am I so today I’m going to enjoy my Labor Day.
I decided to take this Labor Day to actually appreciate what it’s for. Sure, it’s nice to have a day off from work or school, and while that is sort of the point of Labor Day, it’s so much more than that too. Many people (myself included) think that Labor Day is another national holiday to celebrate our countries pride. We should in fact celebrate our pride in the United States, not just on Labor Day, the Fourth of July, and Veterans Day, but everyday.
This History of Labor Day
The holiday itself revolves around the American Labor Movement. We have this movement to thank for many things, including labor unions and safer working conditions. With a major win this year for the West Virginia Teachers Union we should not take for granted how amazing it is to be allowed to union. We should also use today to remember events such as the triangle shirtwaist factory fire, which left 146 workers dead. Maybe we are no longer in the age of the labor movement according to history books, but we should be grateful for all those who fought for the working conditions and rights that we have today.
Today, and every day, I hope we all continue to remember how blessed we are to live in a country that grants us rights like these and lets us freely exercise them. Enjoy the rest of the day not laboring and remember the citizens before us that helped mold this country we call home. God Bless America.
