Mixing Patterns in Fall – Stripes & Polka Dots

Here we go again, another post inspired by my sad little college blog. Honestly though, I think it’s pretty cool to draw inspiration that’s over 5 years old. I was just that fashionable back then *hair flip*. I’m just kidding, but I still do love a lot of the same things. For instance, mixing patterns in Fall is still one of my favorite things. There’s just some kind of illusion that comes with it that make it almost like layering. Which is why I love it for Florida falls. I can only wear so many layers in this heat so giving the illusion of layers through mixing patterns is great.

Mixing Patterns – Classic Stripes & Polka Dots

The two most timeless prints in my opinion are polka dots and stripes. Think vintage Barbie, Audrey Hepburn, and honestly so much more. I know pattern mixing can be scary, just like I said in my gingham on gingham post, but the outcome of it all is magical. Mixing stripes and polka dots is one of the most basic combos in the pattern mixing rule book. You’ve probably seen these patterns mixed before and haven’t even realized it before. Polka dots can be so subtle that you play it off as a neutral. However, I like to go a little bit bolder. Which is why I picked more obvious stripes and polka dots for this outfit.

Recreating the Look

All these pieces are original from my late high school and early college years. How absolutely crazy is that?! Truth be told, I did not fit into this skirt very well back in college. It was far to big as I still had a lack of hips then. Now it sits very nicely on my hips and I don’t need a belt to keep it on. The belt is strictly for fashion not function now. Don’t you love being able to grow in to pieces? It could be a clothing item passed down to you from a relative or something else like me. Whatever the case, fitting properly into clothes feels as amazing as it looks.

I love this! The mixed patterns are so much fun. And the college blog / inspiration isn’t sad – it’s cute when we can draw inspiration from ourselves! Sometimes I look in my closet and think, should I really have this after all this time?? And then I say YES if it still looks good and we can get creative with our looks! That’s the best part about fashion – coming up with outfit ideas and just wearing them in a way that only we can!

Love that! And that’s one of the reasons I love pattern mixing so much because the possibilities are endless!
