My Favorite Alaskan Cruise Excursions

It’s been a little crazy the past week and a half, but I’ve finally pulled together a recap of my Alaskan Cruise Excursions. I got back from my cruise a little over a week ago. Within 5 days I was jetting off again to a wedding up in Virginia. Hopefully I can start getting back into a routine and enjoy some downtime on the weekend for the rest of the summer. For now, take a look at all the adventure I had in Alaska! Hopefully it helps you pick out some things you may want to do in the future.

Alaskan Cruise Excursions

Sled Dogs

Our first port day was in Juneau. Juneau is the capital of Alaska and from the looks of it, had a good sized population. Our excursion while in Juneau was visiting the sled dogs. If you’re a dog or animal lover, this is a must do excursion! Contrary to popular belief, the dogs are not pure-bread huskies, but husky mixes in most cases. This excursion let’s you ride in a cart with wheels that can seat up to 6 people. The sled dogs then lead you on a path through the rainforest (yes rainforest) of Alaska. Their musher gives commands throughout the ride and it is just truly amazing to watch. After your ride through the forest you have an opportunity to pet the dogs who mushed you, as well as seeing and getting to hold new puppies.

Train on the Yukon Trail

Our second port was in the cute little town of Skagway. I personally thought it had an old western feel to the town. Which is probably due to the fact that this was a major town in the gold rush days. Infect, the Yukon trail was created as a path to the gold rush up in Canada. The railroad that follows the trail was originally intended for these travelers as a safer and faster alternative to walking up the mountains along the trail. Unfortunately, by the time the railroad was complete, the gold rush was over. The train ride along the Yukon trail has some of the most amazing views I saw on the trip. Waterfalls, tunnels, mountains, it was stunning.

Crab Feast

One of my boyfriends favorite foods is crab, so of course we had to do a crab feast excursion. This excursion starts out by taking you on a boat to see the surrounding area and take you to the crab baskets. We saw eagles grab fish right out of the water, saw a gorgeous waterfall, learned about the wildlife and so much more.

My favorite part of the boat ride was pulling up the crab trap and getting to hold the crab! How cool is that?! Don’t worry, we didn’t cook and eat him right away. There were plenty of his little friends back at the lodge that the feast was at! It was all you can eat crab (in the time we had that is). We had about an hour I would say to crack open and eat as much crab as we could. Let me tell you, that was not enough time. But I am grateful for how much I did get to eat because it was delicious.

Non- Alaskan Cruise Excursions

Glacier Bay

Glacier Bay isn’t an excursion per-say, but it is a super unique experience! Not every Alaskan Cruise ship goes to Glacier Bay National Park because it is a protected park and they are trying to keep it as clean as possible. It does cost a little more for a cruise ship that goes into Glacier Bay but it is so worth it. There’s just something so chilling (pun intended) about seeing a chunk of ice that large and to know that it was once even bigger!

PS: If You couldn’t tell, I lived in my Nike Windbreaker most of the time I was on land. I would highly recommend bringing one if you are headed on an Alaskan Cruise anytime soon. Here are a few of my favorites below:
