Styling a Boat Hat for Summer

There’s so many summer accessories to choose from, particularly in the hat category. A ball cap, sunhat, and visor are all great summer headwear options. While I love a good sunhat when at the beach or the pool, for more every day I tend to go with a boat hat. (Also known as a boater hat. The “er” really make’s a difference). A boat hat is not to be confused with hat’s you wear on boats (though you can if you like). They are a style that are great both in function and fashion. I find that a boat hat is more appropriate for every day wear because it is not as large as a floppy sunhat, but still blocks the sun around a continuous rim. (Therefore, the back of your neck stays equally as protected as your face. Unlike a ball cap).

Now you’ve probably seen this boater hat in a handful of post already. (I like to double it as a felt hat in fall, since they have a similar structure). I got it last spring from Target and it must be pretty popular because they brought it back this season as well. Originally I bought it because it was a great price (under $15!) and I love a good hat. It was my first boater hat and the more I wear it, the more I want to buy more. (How many times can you say “more” in a sentence?) What I really love about this Target style though is that it is adjustable. Which you don’t find in many hat’s that aren’t ball caps or visors. Having a small head, this was a pleasant surprise to discover. Though I look forward to buying more boat hats in the future, I do think this feature will be one I miss.

Styling a Boat Hat

Like I stated before, I don’t usually wear a boat hat when I’m at the beach or the pool. I like to pull out the big sun hats for those occasions. But I love a boat hat for enjoying brunch outside, a stroll around the neighborhood or park, and even just everyday task. It takes an outfit to a new level that looks polished and put together. Though it’s not a derby hat, I do feel like I’m at the derby when I wear it. Which makes it extra perfect this time of year.
