Season of Love
The Tampa Museum of Art is currently holding an exhibition called the “Season of Love” and includes work from artist Yayoi Kusama and Robert Indiana. To some, these names mean nothing. But when paired with their artwork you will understand why the Tampa Museum of Art titled this exhibition “Season of Love”.
The exhibit started in August and runs until March, but some of the most exciting and immersive artwork will end it’s display on February 14th, Valentine’s Day. I highly recommend seeing it before then, especially as it makes for a great date! The Tampa Museum of Art also offers free admission for anyone with a valid student ID. (Note: Don’t throw away your ID once you graduate).
Yayoi Kusama: Love is Calling
I’ve known about Kusama for awhile now. She uses art as a form of therapy for her mental disorder and her art is simply stunning. When I heard that her piece “Love is Calling” was on display in Tampa I knew I had to make the trip. I’ve only ever seen her art on screens or in books and if I knew how amazing it was just by seeing it there, you can only imagine how awestruck I was finally seeing this piece in real life. Love is Calling, is one of Kusama’s “infinity rooms”. The room is entirely covered in mirrors, making the room seem infinite, hence the name, infinity room. The only downside to this incredible room is the limited amount of time you get to spend in it. But even that is beautiful in knowing that the artist lives in that world everyday. Kusama is truly inspiring and shows the power that art can have over any illness. Love is Calling is only on display until February 14th.
Robert Indiana: A Sculpture Retrospective
Probably more famous in artwork than in name is Robert Indiana. Most widely known for his “LOVE” sculpture, Indiana’s work can be seen all over the country. Indiana’s sculpture is iconically known to be in Philadelphia, but this exhibit, “A Sculpture Retrospective” is much more than that. This exhibit is a combination of many of his sculptures, from his smaller LOVE sculptures, to his more recent and unusual ones. Seeing these sculptures in person far outweighs any photograph of them. As you can see, Indiana is an amazing artist with much more to offer than just Love. A Sculpture Retrospective is on display at the Tampa Museum of Art until March 17th.
