What Not to Wear Style Lesson Mixing Patterns

I’ve been watching a lot of What Not to Wear reruns lately and they honestly make me so happy. Stacy and Clinton just get me on so many levels. The outfits they put together are to die for and I would love to spend $5,000 on clothes. Watching the show has gotten me in a much more creative mood with my clothes. Like wearing more bright colors, adding statement jewelry, and mixing patterns. Honestly, I have Stacy and Clinton to thank for my style probably more than anyone. Even back in high school when I felt like the only one wearing skirts and big necklaces I know I had Stacy and Clinton to thank for it.

What Not to Wear or What TO Wear?

Today I’m sharing an outfit that follows one of What Not to Wears many style rules which is, mixing patterns in similar color categories. While the show makes it clear to their “contributors” exactly What Not to Wear, they also go over what TO wear with them. When it comes to what TO wear there should be pattern, texture, color, and shine. For this outfit I’m combining two patterns that share the same color. If Stacy and Clinton were to ask why the two patterns work the answer would be:

A. They share the same color family & B. One print is bold while the other is subtle.

This isn’t to say that two bold prints can’t go together, you just have to be careful that you don’t end up looking like a clown.

This outfit also incorporates the texture, color, and shine elements. The neckline of this top has a great texture to it and the pattern has beautiful, bright, blues. I added a little shine with a bracelet . If I wanted to dress it up a bit more then I would need what’s called a “completer piece”. Which is basically just a blazer, cardigan, or jacket. However, since I’m not wearing this to the office and it’s 90 degrees outside I’m keeping it casual.
