This trend has been around basically since the dawn of time. A cape is a very classic wardrobe piece that has really made a comeback over recent years. Particularly it’s been seen in the fall and winter months. I’ve been eyeing a cape to add to my wardrobe this fall since late summer. I thought that it would be a good item for fall in Florida to be used as a layering piece. I could pair it with a blouse and a skirt, a t-shirt and some jeans, and a multitude of other basic outfits.

Capes remind me of a fashion trend that I totally rocked when I was a kid – the poncho. My all time favorite poncho to wear was a pink crochet with tassels on the edges. I mean, I wore that thing like literally everyday. I also had a thick wool one that I think had pockets? Not 100% on that. Whatever the case, ponchos were so in and I rocked it. As I got older they had a comeback, but with that weird Aztec fabric and print that I could just never get into. These capes though…I’m here for it. I’ve linked some affordable options below.
How to Style a Fall Cape in Florida
Let’s just put this out there, don’t get a wool cape if you live in Florida. While it might be nice for that one 30 degree day in winter, it’s not practical on any other day of the year. I think whats nice about a cape (besides a wool one) is that they do allow for good airflow. Much like a sundress in summer, if you spin, or swoosh, or just walk, it’ll be cooler. This is a huge advantage for Floridians because you can still look fall without melting. I particularly like wearing this cape with my pleated leather skirt and a a sleeveless blouse. It has a ton of fall elements without feeling like fall.
More Ways to Style
If you don’t live in Florida rest assured a cape for fall and winter is still an item I’d suggest looking into. Up north you have the opportunity to rock a thick wool cape, maybe even with fur (which I totally love). Another great option for up north is the blanket scarf that can easily double as a cape. The capes I’ve seen on the market can get really pricey and a scarf is a great alternative that is cheaper but still just as stylish. I really loved cape on Poshmak but they were still a little up there (priced like a coat). And the seller was not working with me on price (the worst). So I opted for this cute one from Amazon (Under $25!) and I love the way it looks. I’ve noticed when shopping for capes on Amazon that they come and go a lot so you have to search often for stuff coming in and out. Below are some capes that I’m totally crushing over right now. If only I could justify their price by living in a cooler climate…
