Cue all the Pinterest inspiration I’ve ever had since making a Pinterest in 2010! My most pinned to board is my style board and my most pinned styles are preppy fall layers. Maybe they aren’t even particularly for fall, but I still love them. Layers are like the preppy girls bible, and all I’ve ever really wanted to be is a preppy girl. Today I’m sharing tips to master preppy fall layers from the experts themselves, the preppy girls.

A Guide to Mastering Preppy Fall Layers
Start with a Base
Typically your base layer is a long sleeve, collared button down. However in Florida, I’ve made the move to sometimes using a sleeveless collared shirt. Whatever works best for you and your need, but the collar is key. The color, pattern, and embellishment of this shirt will determine all other layers beyond this point, so be sure to pay attention carefully.
Add a Layer
Here’s where the fun begins! A regular collared shirt is preppy, sure. But in order to achieve the epitome of all things preppy, you need to add some layers. A fun printed (or plain) sweater or cardigan work as the perfect layer to add over a collared shirt. This is the step where you can choose a ton of ways to style your look. Are you a pattern mixer? A cable knit sweater girl? Or a studious student type? All of these styles can be created with the right added layer.
Add Accessories
Time for the cherry on top, the accessories. Whether it be a strand of pearls, a statement necklace, or a watch, accessories will take you over the edge preppy. This step is not at all required to achieve preppy fall layers, but it sure helps show off your personality even more.
Tips to Creating Preppy Fall Layers
We all know that as easy as layers are, there are some extremely helpful tips that can be given along the way. Check out these 3 tips to help you feel comfortable and look fabulous in all those layers.
One: The J. Crew Cuff // There’s a correct way and a wrong way to rolling up your sleeves (apparently). To add fullness to an outfit try the J. Crew perfect cuff.
Two: Mixing Patterns // Don’t be afraid to mix some patterns in your layers. If you choose a sweater over a cardigan try mixing large polka dots with a smaller checkered print on the collar and cuffs. Odds are it will look great!
Three: Don’t Over Mix // I don’t think this can really be done when it comes to patterns, but it certainly can when it comes to bling. If you’ve got an embellished collar I would recommend not adding another necklace to the mix, unless it is small and dainty. Sometimes the collar does enough to speak for itself.
