A capsule wardrobe is a concept I keep hearing a lot about. Every time I read or see an article about creating one, it makes me want to try it out. A capsule wardrobe is essentially a minimalist approach to fabulous fashion. It requires a base group of essentials in your closet and to build up from there. The ultimate goal of a capsule wardrobe is to save money and have a timeless wardrobe that doesn’t go out of style (hence the name, capsule). I figured the best way for me to finally kick start my capsule wardrobe would be to write about it. So here’s my 4 step guide:
4 Steps to the Perfect Capsule Wardrobe
Clean Out Your Closet
This is the hardest part, right? I always struggle with getting rid of clothes. Don’t worry though, I have a flow chart to help you make all the tough decisions in my Closet Clean Out post. I’ll admit, even with this simple flow chart I find it hard to part with things. Just continue to take baby steps and you’ll get there eventually. Even getting rid of one item is progress. Also learn how to make the most of your closet clean out by using Poshmark to sell items you no longer want.
Grab Your Essentials
You know what I’m talking about: Jeans, pencil skirts, a button up, a plain tee; all your timeless pieces that aren’t “trendy”. Be sure that these are neutrals because you’ll be wearing these pieces a lot and you don’t want to clash. The point of a capsule wardrobe is to achieve a timeless and classic look.
Add Color and Pattern
These pieces will spice up your wardrobe from those neutrals you picked in step two. If you’re extra fashion forward you’ll even find great ways to combine these bright colors and patterns to create an even more exciting wardrobe! Pattern mixing is one of my favorite things of all time. Check out these unlikely patterns that really rock together.
Shoes and Accessories
No wardrobe would be complete without the perfect shoe and bag. Be sure to get these accessories in both neutrals and bright colors to give you the maximum options. Also combine big and small accessories to make an outfit really exciting and stand out!
Just like that you’ve completed a beautiful capsule wardrobe! Easier read than done, no? I’m still working through this process myself, so don’t feel bad if it takes you a couple of months to complete. For an in depth Capsule Wardrobe tutorial, check out this post. Classy but Trendy really inspired me to create my own, so I hope you will be inspired too! Sometimes you just can’t do it better than the pros, and she’s definitely a pro.
