One of my favorite experiences during wedding planning was wedding cake tasting. It was delicious every time, but there were some things I wish I had known beforehand. Here’s a few things to expect from wedding cake tasting in this little know before you go guide.
Know Before You Go: Wedding Cake Tasting
- Come with an empty stomach – Ever heard the phrase, Eat Cake for Breakfast? This is a good approach for wedding cake tasting. We found it best to show up on a mostly empty stomach. Even though samples are small, there’s a lot to try and you don’t want to fill up too soon!
- Have an idea of what you’re looking for before you arrive – Know you want chocolate and not vanilla? It’s good to have this in mind beforehand. There can be a large selection of choices at times and it’s easier to make a decision if you already have an idea of what you want.
- Some Places will Charge – We avoided booking tastings with places that would charge for it. Even if they offered to use that money towards your cake, there’s no guarantee you’ll be picking them to make it. We preferred to just find places that offered complimentary tastings. If you choose to go this route, be sure to add it into your wedding budget.
Sugar Divas Cakery
We ended up getting out cake from Sugar Divas Cakery. They offered a complimentary tasting (with champagne) and they make you a fresh cake for your 1 year anniversary. (That’s right, no freezer burned cake a year later!) This was especially important to us as we were just getting a single tier for us to share on our wedding day. We bought a sheet cake from Publix to cover the rest. (Because Publix always has amazing cake. No tasting needed).
We knew we wanted something along the lines of berry for our cake. I was in a wedding a few years ago and my beautiful friend, the bride, had the best cake we had ever tried! Michael and I had already been to about 4-5 other weddings together before this and were not impressed with the cake ever. This one was different. It was actually moist for one, and the filling was to die for. We believe it was a boysenberry filling on the tier we had and we knew immediately this was the route to take. Our final cake selection was A Champagne & Berry Cake, with Strawberry filling, and vanilla frosting. Our cake was perfectly moist and we can’t wait to have it again on our anniversary!
